I've read some information that drum brake shoes are meant to last about 35k, but i just helped my buddy replace his on his Xterra for the first time in 180,000, and they still had life left in them. I haven't looked at mine yet, but i have 194,000 on the clock, and i'm almost positive they're original.

This diagram shows a typical street rod brake system. A 2 PSI residual pressure valve (RPV) is needed in the disc brake circuit, and a 10 PSI RPV is required in the drum brake circuit as well as an adjustable proportioning valve (APV).

Once the drum is removed, inspect the inside surface of the drum. Our brake shoes had worn all the way through, and the metal portion of the shoe had ruined the surface of the drum. To create a new surface on the drum, the drums must be turned on a lathe. I carried the brake drum into a local brake shop and paid them to 'turn' this drum.

To remove the hub grind off or drill through the head of the rivet, then use a punch and a hammer to drive the remaining piece through the hub and brake drum. The drum may still stick to the hub because of 45+ years of intimate contact.
